On January 12, 2010, Haiti was hit with a 7.0 magnitude earthquake. An estimated 300,000 people lost their lives, more than 1 million people were displaced, and infrastructure across the country was left in ruins. 1.5 million children and young people under the age of 18 were directly or indirectly affected by the quake; approximately 720,000 of them were between six and 12 years old. Heather, partnering with Soles 4 Soulds, Inc., traveled to Haiti in the wake of the disaster to distribute shoes to children in orphanages. As she was leaving an orphanage in the capital of Port Au Prince, Heather encountered a little girl who wouldn't stop crying. Between the child's broken English and Heather's basic French, she figured out the little girl was asking for a baby doll. Heather was reminded kids are kids no matter the circumstances and she promised to bring the little girl a doll.
